21700 Battery Cell Description
What is the 21700 battery? The 21700 battery is a lithium-ion rechargeable battery or cell. The 21700 is the size of the cell (21mm round x 70mm long). Lithium-ion is the reactive chemical that is often mixed with other chemicals to produce the rechargeable energy properties.
It is used in all types of rechargeable devices from cameras to flashlights, but typically not removable. Now they have been slowly integrated into vape mods with removable batteries.
The 18650 has been the choice size for vape mods until the recent trend of upsizing. This trend is growing amongst cloud chasers, and means the search for better batteries, coincides with better vape cloud production.
In the world of cloud chasing size does matter. With the obvious larger size of the 21700, does it make up for it in power, compared to the 18650? What is the 21700 battery compared to smaller sizes?
Will the 21700 battery last, or fade out in popularity within the vape mod world, as did the 26500? I will answer these questions below and direct you to your best vape mod options.
If you don’t know what I’m talking about, these are the sizes associated with cylindrical rechargeable batteries, popular in the vape community. 21700 stands for approximately, 21mm round x 70mm long.
Cloud chasers want bigger and better devices all the time, maybe the 21700 will make some new friends in the vape world.
Excellent Choice 21700 Cells For Vaping
Here are a few excellent 21700 cells for vaping in mods.
These high capacity, high discharge cells, will finally satisfy your hungry mods.
Samsung 40T INR 21700
4000mAH - 35A/45A
HohmTech HohmRun INR21700
4007mAH - 30A/38A
4750mAH - 10A/30A
Why do I want a 21700?
Longer battery life is the best feature, trailed by higher Discharge or C rating. I feel the 21700 is the best lithium-ion rechargeable battery soon to be very popular in the vapor mod world, and is one of the cheapest, so that’s a no brainer. A 21700 works best with a single battery sub ohm mod below 80 watts.
Fact 1: The Best Capacity Trade-Offs
For example, the massive size of the 26650 was known to vapers to have a high CDR up to 40A plus, but the capacity wasn’t much to speak of staying at 3000mah. For this size of battery you might expect better.
With the 21700 battery you can get higher capacity and maintain a higher CDR as compared to the 18650 and 26500 with the trade off in size.
Fact 2: The 21700 is Cheapest to Make
With the trade offs in energy compared to size increase you end up getting more capacity for the same cost with the 21700 compared to the 18650.
This makes the 21700, I have found even cheaper then the 18650 to buy.
Fact 3: The 21700 Size Has been Tesla Approved
Tesla wants to make the most efficient cars of course. Due to the two factors above They are manufacturing many more 21700 and implementing them within their latest designs.
Replacing a Giant
What is the 21700 battery compared to the 18650. When manufacturing the 21700, technically you are producing larger cells for the same cost. The 10% larger size of the cell produces 1.3% more energy, thus producing cost savings.
The 18650 battery is a giant in the battery world and is found everywhere. These can be found in electric cars, laptops, flashlights, cameras, and of course vape mods. Most production lines are set to continue the mass production of this size battery.
However, with the huge influence of the automotive energy industry, mainly Tesla, the push for more efficient batteries is real, and continues. In light of the 21700 battery advantages, coupled with Tesla’s huge industry influence, it is likely to become the next rechargeable battery development trend.
While most are probably still vested in 18650s, and all our products are designed for these, every day, new devices are fitted for larger batteries. Personally I don’t know if its worth the switch because of the larger size, although, I might only use one 21700 instead of two 18650s.
If the price of upgraded mods, and the 21700 style batteries stays the same or lower than 18650s, than it is worth the investment to me, for a little more power and life.
Not Recommended For Beginners
This might not be the case for some vapers as this might dive into more extreme vaping, and deem the extra power, weight, and size unnecessary. Not all vape mods are gonna fit the 21700 cell size, and upgrading your mod, might be not worth the extra girth just for a little more power, or battery life.
For the veteran sub oHm vapers I would say yes, make the switch because every little bit counts if it is your hobby. If your asking the question “what is a 21700 battery?,” than you actually might wanna start smaller.
What’s The Hype
What is the 21700 batteries hype amongst the other similar sizes. The issues with just simply making batteries bigger, is safety. A 26500 will have a higher mAh rating but lack in amp output, compared to 18650, really the bigger you go with a cell the slower it gets.
While being only slightly bigger than the 20700, the 21700 has found a very efficient middle ground, that gives you excellent capacity, coupled with high amp output and a reasonable discharge rate.
I read that the price to make these 21700 style batteries, is cheaper than the 18650s. This could eventually make them even lower in price, once more machines are tooled and streamlined for more production as the demand increases.
If this is the case, then the obvious advantage in performance would go to the 21700, but lighter design would go to the 18650.
You would have to decide what is best to suit your vape style. If you find yourself blasting consistently at 150 watts and up, the bigger battery was made for you.
I know the 18650 will never be completely overcome by the 21700, but the fact that it was used in a recent Tesla car says the 21700 must be efficient. I don’t know if efficiency is what vapers want in a battery as much they do power, but with the 21700 vape mod battery you can have both.
With the power ratings at the top of charts and the cost of production being low, I would keep a sharp watch on the trends of this battery as they most likely will continue to climb.
Imren has been one of my trusted 18650 brands for years, and I would definitely give that brand a try.
I have tried the Golisi 21700 S35 37500mAH cells, but they only charged to 2300mAH when tested, brand new, fully charged.
