A lot of people have asked me these three questions: “what is E-liquid, what are nic salts, and are they the same? Well first off let me say, e-liquid and nic salts are not the same. They do have similar ingredients but highly different nicotine concentrations and should be used in separate delivery methods.
E-liquid can also be called e-juice, vape juice, or vape liquid. E-liquid is the juice used in sub ohm vape devices. This type of vaping can also be called cloud chasing, and is designed to draw huge clouds of vapor. Cloud chasing has actually become a competitive sport, although I feel guilty saying sport right there. Sub ohm vaping has become very popular and is growing still, along with the interest in the awesome flavors E-liquid has to offer.
Substantially growing in popularity is Nic Salts, or nicotine salts, a more concentrated form of nicotine then e-liquid. Nic salt are used in lower powered vape devices known as pods. The beauty in nic salts is the very smooth vape hit loaded with nicotine. This can help curb your smoking, or limit your vape usage, as well as give you a faster nicotine buzz. What Is E-Liquid Made Of?
E-liquid is what creates the vapor when your coil hits between 200 and 400 degrees Fahrenheit. It is made of a 90% Propylene glycol, and vegetable glycerin mixture. The other 10% is a mixture of nicotine water and food grade flavoring.
Propylene glycol or PG, is a liquid alcohol solvent. Its synthetic chemical makeup is C₃H₈O₂. It is non-toxic, viscous, colorless, and almost odorless liquid that is also used in food and other industries. A less viscous PG/VG mix can be around 80/20, for lower powered atomizers. A more viscous mix can be called max VG at 70/30 ratio, used for higher powered sub ohm atomizers.
Propylene glycol is said to be safe and found in all types of products we consume everyday. But I must note that propylene glycol is very toxic to cats. I don’t know in what levels of consumption, but can cause anemia in cats.
Vegetable glycerin or VG, is also known as glycerol. VG is a polyol compound with a formula of C3H8O3. It is a non-toxic. viscous, colorless, odorless, sweet tasting liquid, produced from plant oils. VG is also used in the food as well as the cosmetic industry and more.
The flavorings are the same that are found in foods. I have not found a technical name for this other than food grade flavorings. And flavors are delicious and abundant. I you have information on food flavorings or extracts please comment below.
The nicotine is derived straight from the plant in a freebase form, and levels can be chosen by you at 0 mg up to 12mg. I wouldn’t recommend higher, if you find yourself at these high nicotine levels you may want to consider nic salts.
What Are Nic Salts Made Of?
Nic salts has the same nicotine found in e-liquid with benzoic acid added to reduce PH levels. This lowers the alkalinity and gives you more nicotine in a smaller vape hit. That is really the only difference between nic salts and e-liquid, the rest of the mixture is the same just less percentage. I have found this allows you to inhale a smoother hit straight to the throat.
Nicotine salts is a liquid designed for smaller vape devices such as pods. This will give you a smaller vape hit similar to a real cigarette. Also referred to as a throat hit from a pod with nic salts. This is perfect for someone looking to kick the cigarette habit.
Geared towards people searching for more of a nicotine effect and less of a giant vape cloud, and/or a more discreet pocket friendly device.
Be careful because the nicotine levels are significantly higher than e-liquid, don’t just throw it in your sub ohm device. But never fear cloud chasers, your cloud chuckin devices will still work with some nic salts. You can get lower mg level nic salts, and then lower your devices power or temperature. You still should not huck clouds, but keep it to small hits.
Is E-liquid or Nic Salt Harmful?
Nicotine does have bad effects on the body. Nicotine is addictive of course, and this can cause depression or crabbiness. Some studies say It’s bad for your arteries and for people with heart disease.
E-liquid isn’t 100% safe, but experts say it is 95% less harmful than cigarettes. This percentage is controversial and it is said that a more practical estimate might be 80% to 85% less dangerous.
Diacetyl is a buttery-tasting chemical well-known for harmful effects if vaped. This is the chemical known to cause the lung disease called popcorn lung, or called constrictive bronchiolitis. It was called popcorn lung because of its use as a flavoring on popcorn.
Diacetyl is banned from vape-juice in the UK but could still possibly be found in some mixtures on the market. The thing I find strange is diacetyl is found in greater amounts in cigarettes. I also couldn’t find an example where a person was diagnosed with this disease directly connected to vaping.
Some other Harmful Chemicals said to be found in the e-liquid ingredients but in very small amounts, and can also be found in cigarettes in much larger amounts. Their chemical makeup is similar to Diacetyl.
Is Second Hand Vapor Harmful?
With the lowered effects of vaping compared to cigarettes, it’s obvious that second hand vape would be less dangerous as well. While second hand vapor is not absolutely 100% safe, the dangers are extremely low.
Vaping is still banned in most establishments where I live. I don’t Know if it’s from annoyance of huge clouds, or fear of the unknown, but it’s ridiculous to me.
My car windows seem to be covered with an oily residue from vaping. This makes it extremely difficult to defrost, especially as I also continue vaping moisture into the air. This appears to be happening inside my apartment as well only on the windows.
I would like to know if anyone else has experienced this, please comment below. Rolling my windows down all the way isn’t always an option, and I would like a solution to this.
